the Cave of the Winds

The original Cave of the Winds was discovered in the early 1800's and was located directly behind the Bridal Veil Fall.  Sightseers at that time could actually walk behind the fall for what must have been a truly incredible experience.  On Sept. 6, 1920, several tons of shale rock broke loose from above and fell on a group of people as they were exiting the cave.  Three people were killed that day and tour was promptly discontinued.  Now the tour allows you to get to within 50 feet of the fall, which is still pretty amazing.  On what is called the hurricane deck, the water is so powerful that is penetrated our "raingear," completely soaking us for the rest of the day--but it was well worth it.  If you've never been to the cave of the winds, you should definitely experience it for yourself.
